This is my entry for the Billy Blue Change Your World
competition, entitled "Catch the light".
My piece is a representation of how the little things in life can instigate change within our lives; all it takes is a heartfelt smile amongst the obscurity existing in times of hardship. Initially this was a photograph that was extremely hard to get considering my little model isn’t one to sit still. I enriched the photograph to meet my ideas for the piece with the addition of various lighting adjustments and techniques to encompass that dark sentiment. Aligned with this, I also manipulated the photograph by adding the faint ring-like markings around the subject along with the crack upon the ground. Both are supplementary characteristics contributing to my theme. The scribbled lines represent how life is ever changing yet revolves in a constant paradox whilst the crack embodies a certain breaking point we may experience.
However I didn’t wish my image to exemplify such a bitter sentiment therefore the white against the dark represents how within a world that isn’t perfect there is always a light amongst it (thus my title "catch the light") that can influence the positive change I hope to accomplish in life. And whilst the image does have its darkness to it, the models smile is a juxtaposition with which is a focal to the image that symbolises how something as small as a smile from a dog can spark happiness within the hearts of others. I know for sure if I ever return home with a dark cloud above my head, seeing his little smile instantly brings me joy with which encourages and motivates me to strive for change.“Use your smile to change the world but don’t let the world change your smile”
